Don't start an online business to make money quick
yes I said it
It’s a dangerous path to go down. Here’s why:
All the big gurus are preaching:
Learn a profitable online skill, educate, and then create a service around it. They tell you to go into ghostwriting copy, video editing, email marketing, social media management, etc…
And that’s great and all! Ghostwriting allowed me to earn $10k+/month, so I’m grateful for the mentors who steered me in this direction.
But it also creates an issue:
I see many people creating a business around an online skill just because they think it will bring them money - completely disregarding their interest.
I liked writing for others, but the problem was that I was writing so much for others that it didn’t allow me to write in-depth content for myself. You only have so much creativity for the day and I was burning it all out on my clients.
I realized the only way to make my business sustainable is to give more attention to the content I want to create for myself - and that meant scaling back on the Ghostwriting (aka less income).
But that’s okay - because I learned: the only way to make this work for me is to create the content I want to create.
Now that’s my experience but the point is - you need to create a business around your interests.
Problem:
Often the business that feels the most authentic to you is the one that takes the longest to be profitable. But boooy does it feel good when it finally does.
You might make faster money if you learn a desirable online skill - but that might not be the skill you ultimately want to do for your whole life.
But the thing that feels the most authentic to you you will want to do forever. It will be impossible for you to burn out - simple as that.
So the question here is: What interest do you want to build your business around?
Build a business around a get-rich-quick scheme and you might make money quicker but eventually, you won’t enjoy doing it anymore.
Build a business around your passion and it will take longer to build but will be 100x more rewarding.
That’s the truth.
Take mental health coaches for example:
If you want to create a business around counselling it takes time. Sure a little minority might be able to get their first client within the first 1-3 months but on average it takes a year to build.
People take more time to invest in mental health coaches cause they have to build trust with you first. Also, it’s a different investment because the money you invest in it doesn’t manifest in building a profitable business that makes money (but with Ghostwriting, they invest in me and I make them money in return with the content I create for them).
So if you’re in the mental health space you need to be extra patient with seeing the results. But that’s okay - if you are in it for life. 🙂
Build a business for the next 30-50 years and you will develop patience naturally…because you will give yourself much more time.
So the main message here is:
Don’t put pressure on yourself to make money fast. Get a side job if necessary and build your business slowly around the skills that truly interest you. Because remember: You’re in it for life 🙂 . Building a business around your interests takes time.
